Whitman Books : Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures 2nd Edition
David Bowers’s Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures, one of the most exciting coin-collecting books of recent years, has been released in a new second edition by Whitman Publishing. The 480-page hardcover book is available online and in bookstores and hobby shops nationwide.
Whitman publisher Dennis Tucker recalls how the book came to be. In the summer of 2014 at Whitman Publishing we started planning a new book by Q. David Bowers. I remember talking with our editorial team about the project. Its foundation would be several decades’ worth of Bower’s research on American coin treasures and hoards. His information-gathering had started in the 1950s when he was a young man just beginning what would become a lifelong career as a numismatist and historian. Over the years and decades, Dave would write about coin hoards and treasures in numerous columns, articles, auction catalogs, books, and elsewhere. His first book devoted entirely to the subject was published in 1997. These 50-plus years of research would form the basis of a new, bigger, updated volume that we planned to publish in 2015.
Lost and Found Coin Hoards and Treasures included some two dozen significant updates to earlier published essays, with new research and sales information, plus recent discoveries from the past 10 to 15 years and, notably, a dramatic update to the story of the sunken SS Central America. The latter was and is one of Dave’s greatest numismatic obsessions.
Whitman’s intro to this new book is epic – Every story inside this book is true. Tales of treasure from sunken ships, bank vaults and reserves, hidden compartments, buried chests and boxes, vintage safes, hiding places of pirates and privateers, old cornerstones, barrels and casks, Mint and Treasury storage, wrecked buildings, caves and crevices, ancient estates, dusty time capsules, forgotten collections, misers’ attics and basements, and other lost and hidden places.
Join master storyteller Q. David Bowers as he shines light on the most astounding, dramatic, and unusual American coin hoards and treasures. Barrels of old colonial coppers. Mountains of hefty silver dollars. Boxes of gleaming gold. You’ll find yourself daydreaming…..but you’ll also be inspired to join the hunt. Many of these treasures have already been found, but many others are waiting for you to find them!
